Finally Got The Hornet’s Nest Down

Finally Got The Hornet’s Nest Down

My husband finally got the hornet nest down from the tree in our neighbor’s yard. The hornets nest was only hanging on my a twig, so he was able to throw a stick at it and knock it down.

As you can tell, it is about the size of soccer ball. It has layer upon thin layer of paper thin chewed wood mixed with saliva. Gross, isn’t it!

When it hit the ground, the bottom part fell off of it. You can tell where they bore the holes in the nest.

This part looked like it was where the larvae were at.

I then took a knife and sliced through the middle of the nest. It has 3 different layers inside. This was a pretty neat nest to look at. We plan on taking it to a nature preserve that is near our house to see if they would like to keep it to show kids who come to visit. I know my kids found it interesting!

Candy Roaster

Candy Roaster

A couple of people asked what a candy roaster was. A candy roaster is in the squash family from what I can tell. The North Carolina version is a light orange/peach color and can weigh up to 60 lbs. You can cook them just like a pumpkin or a squash. Split them open, scrape the seeds out of them and roast them in the oven. We puree the cooked inside and use it to make a casserole, souffle or pie. They have a sweeter taste than the other squash, or at least to me they do.

I found this website with a couple of recipes for the candy roaster. I have baked the first recipe and it was very yummy! I am looking forward to baking more with the candy roaster. My kids love it and think that it taste just like pumpkin pie when I make a souffle out of it.

Do you have any native veggies or fruits in your area that you enjoy cooking and baking with?
