The Big Book of History ~ book review

The Big Book of History ~ book review

The Big Book of History is written by Laura Welch and published by New Leaf Publishing Group.

The Big Book of History is a 15 foot fold out time-line.  You can use it like a book and flip through the pages, or you can fold it completely out.  It is a time-line that covers from Creation to the time that it was published.  It as 4 different lines and each line represent 4 different events.  You have Biblical events, inventions, world events and civilizations and empires.

This time-line book isn’t just a bunch of dates on a line.  It has pictures and little comments through out the book to help explain the dates that are mentioned.  The biblical events listed are some of the major events that happened in the bible.  It also lists the major inventions, world events and civilizations/empires that have made a huge impact on our world.

The Big Book of History is colorful and very easy to follow.  You can keep it compact in a book shape or you can fold it out completely and hang on the wall.

Overall, the kids and I really liked the Big Book of History.  It has a lot of information that led to some great conversations.  The kids enjoyed folding out the book and comparing when events happened.   I see us using this often on our homeschool.  It is definitely a conversation piece with my children and I.

The World of Science – book review

The World of Science – book review

The World of Science is published by My Father’s World and Master Books.  Master Books is a division of New Leaf Publishing Group.

In this world, it is hard to find books that talk about and teach science from a Creation point of view.  New Leaf Publishing has published a book that does just that, The World of Science.

This book is hardcover and has 240+ pages with over 800 colored pictures in it.  It has 7 sections in the book; Matter and Chemicals, Energy, Motion and Machines, Electricity and Magnetism, Light and Sound,  Earth and Life, Space and time, with the final section being science experiments that you and your children can do together.

As I mentioned before, this book teaches science from a creation point of view.  However, it isn’t an apologetic’s book.  It just blatantly states that God created everything in the beginning of the book and I like that.  I also like how it includes the scientists that discovered certain things, for example, Benjamin Franklin discovering electricity.

The experiment section in the book has over 60 experiments that you can do.  A lot of the experiments use items that you can find right in your own home.  Which makes it a lot more fun and easier to do.  We have tried a couple of them ourselves and enjoyed doing them.

The World of Science book is one of our favorite science books to look through and read.  I find the kids looking at it often and checking to see if we do have the right items to do the experiments.  I highly recommend this book to families to read together.

This weekend only, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, you can receive $8 off regular price on registration for the Teach Them Diligently Conference!  Who will be there?  Voddie Baucham, Pam Tebow, Heidi St. John, Davis and Rachael Carman, Ken Collier, Ken Ham, Hal and Melanie Young and many more!

Teach Them Diligently has an amazing children’s program called “Battle for Truth”, being led by Matt and Anna Reid.

Here are a few more questions being answered about the Teach Them Diligently Conference.

What can I learn at the Teach Them Diligently Convention?
Teach Them Diligently understands that for many parents
homeschooling is not simply an academic exercise. We seek to renew what we
believe was the initial driving force for all Christian parents in
homeschooling – to disciple and equip their children to glorify God.

In addition to teaching techniques and the use of curriculum
taught at normal homeschool conventions, we will also have a large focus on missions,
discipleship and parenting. The general sessions and hundreds of workshops are
taught by experts in the field and parents in the trenches. Not sure how to
choose which workshops you want to attend? We offer several tracks including
getting started homeschooling, special needs, health & nutrition and
filmmaking to name a few.

How does Teach Them Diligently support missions?
The organizers of this convention are also officers of
Worldwide Tentmakers, a mission agency focused on tentmaking as a missions
strategy found in Acts 18. All of the profits from this convention go to
support missions around the world. Over the last 25 years, Worldwide Tentmakers
has placed hundreds of English-language teachers, engineers, lumber jacks,
carpenters, and even business owners in foreign countries by using a service or
skill.
Who will be there?

Attended by 7,000 homeschoolers in 2012, Teach Them Diligently is expanding in 2013 and will be at three locations in May – Spartanburg, SC; Nashville, TN; and Omaha, NE. Not only does Teach Them Diligently feature a large exhibit hall filled with vendors, and hundreds of workshops, but they also invite several of the best speakers in the homeschool community. Many attendees and vendors have said this is the best homeschool convention in the country. You will not want to miss Teach Them Diligently this year!

Teaching Creation Thursday ~ Grand Canyon and a giveaway!

Teaching Creation Thursday ~ Grand Canyon and a giveaway!

This week Dr. Reeves will be sharing with us about the Earth.

Many evolutionists consider the “Geologic Column” the strongest evidence that life arose gradually over millions of years. They claim that the sedimentary layers of rocks found all over the world show that the first forms of life to evolve are found in the deepest layers and the living things that evolved later are found in the upper layers.

However, this explanation is found to have a number of flaws. We believe you may find the Flood provides the best explanation for the earth’s sedimentary layers and is much more logical than the explanation given by evolutionists. Go to www.investigatethepossibilities.org and click on the “articles” tab for a kid-friendly article about the sedimentary layers in Grand Canyon.  Or you can just click HERE.  Which explanation do you think fits the evidence best–millions of years of evolution or a world wide flood?

Take time to browse around Investigate the Possibilities!  There are a lot of experiments, articles and videos to help you Investigate the Possibilities!

Next week, Dr. Reeves will follow up with a lesson about how sedimentary layers form and how some now-hardened layers formed in hours and days as a result of geologic activity after the Mt. Saint Helens eruption.

Now on to the giveaway!  I will be giving away this teacher guide and student Journal to The Earth: Its Structure and Its Changes!  My oldest  daughter and I did this book together and really enjoyed it.  I think your children will too!

why I love Bright Ideas Press, a History link-up and a giveaway!!

why I love Bright Ideas Press, a History link-up and a giveaway!!

Every since I started using Bright Ideas Press History and Geography last year, my kids and I have truly fell in love with it.  This curriculum works for our family.  How does it work?  The Mystery of History Volume 1 that we have been using, teaches Ancient Civilizations through the time of Christ.  We did start this volume last year, but started it over this year when I found out about their Illuminations program (which I also highly recommend!).  I am so glad that we did start over.  I am able to use this history book with all three of my children that I am homeschooling this year.  They are in the 9th, 2nd and 1st grades.  I love the fact that I can use it with all three kids.  Each lesson consists of a lesson that can be from 1-3 pages long.  Then at the end of the lesson, there are activities and projects for younger, middle and older children.  It works out great for us.  Also, in the back of the book, they have a book list for extra reading for the lessons.  I also have to mention the WonderMaps program.   The amount of maps that they have, starting with the ancient civilizations and going through chronological order, up through modern times is amazing!  We are also enjoying the Hands-On Geography and the Time-line.  It is so fun to see my kids enjoy history coming to life!

Just look at what we did this past week!

So as you can tell, we love all that Bright Ideas Press has to offer!  That is I am going to host a history link-up for those who are using Bright Ideas Press curriculum.  If you use ANY of the history or geography curriculum that they publish, this link-up is for you!

Since it is Thanksgiving weekend and I am late getting this post up, I won’t do a link-up today.  However, come  back next Wednesday with your posts ready!  I will also have a landing page at the top of the blog that you will be able to click on with all the info needed.  I will also have a button in the side bar that you will be able to put on your blog as well. (Thank you to Honey at Honeycomb Design Studio for creating the beautiful buttons and banners!)

I also have to let you know that this was my idea and I am doing it all on my own.  While Bright Ideas Press does know about the link-up, they do not have anything to do with it.  I will be hosting it on my blog .  They are supporting me and have even donated $20 in store credit as a first giveaway!

That’s right, the giveaway that Bright Ideas Press is donating, is a $20 store credit.  It is just in time for this weekend’s sale!

All you have to do to enter the contest is leave me a comment telling me what you would use the $20 store credit on at Bright Ideas Press!  I will choose a winner late Friday night.  That will still give you plenty of time to use the store credit!

Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

**UPDATE** Using Random.org, the winner is Cindy!!  Congrats!!
