Homeschooling – Building A Bird Nest!

Homeschooling – Building A Bird Nest!

For science, I had planned on using the Sonlight Core K Science books for my 2 younger children. Instead of following their teacher edition, we have just been reading the books. I got really excited when I first saw that most of the books were from Usborne.  The first book we are reading is the Eggs and Chicks book. In the first couple of pages, it talks about how birds build their nests and showed several different types of nests. I thought it would be a neat project if they tried to build a nest.

First we read about how the birds built their nest.
We then collected grass, leaves and twigs.
Next, we did our best to make the base as round as we could by stacking twigs on each other.
We continued stacking it until we made a little hollow in the middle.
Once we finished our nest, we went on a little hike around our yard to see if we could find any nests already build by the professionals, the birds!  We found an old one in the birdhouse that just recently fell off  the tree it was on.
The second birdhouse we found was on our front porch.  It was in the corner next to our front door.
The kids noticed that the first birdhouse was made out of grass and pine needles.  The second nest was made out of grass and twigs and put together with mud/spit.  We had a lot of fun doing this little project and look forward to doing many more just like it!

L.E.N.S. Photo Challenge- “Orange”

L.E.N.S. Photo Challenge- “Orange”
The L.E.N.S. Photo Challenge this week is Orange. What a wonderful color to choose for this time of year. There are so many different orange colored objects and one of the most notable would be the pumpkin. I also imagine there are many orange colored leaves as well. I am looking forward to riding in the mountains and taking pictures of those beautiful leaves.
However, the picture I chose for the orange edition is an orange azalea.  It is my favorite flower during the spring time.  I just love how the color stands out among the other flowers.

I can’t wait to see the pictures other have chosen for the “Orange Edition“. Be sure to stop by Home Is Where You Start From to see who all participates. I know you won’t be disappointed!

Wooly Worm Or Something Else??

Wooly Worm Or Something Else??

As we were walking the dog this afternoon, we noticed this furry little thing on a tree.  So of course this turned into a science lesson!  My first thought was that it is a wooly wormWooly worms have been thought of to predict whether or not we will have a mild or rough winter.  Supposedly, the more brown on the worm, the milder the winter.  Well, this wooly worm is solid black!  So does that mean we are in for a rough winter??  I just don’t know.  What all do you think??  I would love to hear from you!
