Christmas 2013

Christmas 2013

We woke up to a beautiful day, to celebrate Jesus’ birthday and our love for one another.

Christmas Morning

Christmas Morning

While we missed our extended family that lives on the east coast, we still enjoyed a wonderful day with just our children.  I am very thankful and blessed that the grandparents sent the kids gifts, even though we couldn’t be there with them.  Even though they weren’t with us in person, they were definitely with us in spirit.

Our tree this year, did not last long at all.  It was a fire hazard by the time Christmas day arrived.  The needles had already started turning brown.  In years part, we always left our tree up until mid-January, however, it came down the day after Christmas.   We still loved looking at the ornaments and talking about where they came from and who gave them to us.  The memories our tree could tell you.

I always enjoy watching our children open their gifts and this year was no different.  We always ask a few months in advance for the kids to make us a list of a few things they would like.  We have been blessed to be able to get the kids a couple of things that they wanted.  As you can see on their faces, they were surprised and very thankful.

Another thing I love about Christmas, is seeing what my children want to give and make for their siblings.  We have been blessed with children who love to give and do for others.  This year, my oldest daughter surprised her siblings with homemade light sabers.  Her creative mind is constantly moving and she always creates amazing things.  This year was no different.  I think the younger children enjoyed these gifts, as much as the store bought ones.

I also got a surprise this year.  My wonderful and amazing hubby surprised me with a Kindle. He knows I love to read and I have been having trouble reading ebooks from my phone.  The print is just too small and it gave me headaches to read from my phone.  He knew that and bought the Kindle, so that I could enlarge the print.  It was definitely a wonderful surprise and one that I won’t forget any time soon.

I am truly blessed with an amazing family.  I love their hearts and minds.  They know we celebrate Christmas because of the beautiful gift that God gave us, His son, Jesus.

So while Christmas has come and gone, we will still continue to celebrate Jesus and do our best to follow in his footsteps all year long.

How was your Christmas?  Do you have any special memories or special gifts from this year?  I would love for you to share them with me.

Wednesday’s Around the World ~ Athens, Sparta, Manasseh and The Powers of Mesopotamia

Wednesday’s Around the World ~ Athens, Sparta, Manasseh and The Powers of Mesopotamia

I am really enjoying the Wednesday’s Around the World link-up.  Not only do I love history and geography, it also helps hold me accountable for our lessons.  Athens, Sparta, Manasseh and The Powers of Mesopotamia is what we have studies this last week in our  Mystery of History: Volume 1 book.

We began reading about The Rise of Athens and Sparta.  Sparta was a very strong city-state.  They trained men, women and even children to do battle.  They didn’t allow people in and out of their city because they feared their neighbors.

Athens was also a large city-state, but they were a little different than the Spartans.  They enjoyed cultural things.  They loved the arts! The people of Athens enjoyed music, drama and were even known for their love of pottery.  They decorated the pottery they made with all sorts of designs.

For our activity, we were to draw a design of our own on a piece of pottery.  I could not find a terra-cotta clay pot, but did find some that were already painted a solid color and fired.  I let the kids choose their color of pot and they also decided to use colored permanent marker instead of a black marker.  I love my kids imaginations!

Claire and Samuel both decided to draw trees and flowers on their pots.

The finished products turned out great!

Next we read about King Menessah, the son of Hezekiah.  We learned that he was nothing like his father.  He was a very bad and evil king.  The sins he committed were horrible, including using the Temple that Solomon built as a place for God, and he put his own idols to worship, in there.

We also see a change though after 22 years.  King Manasseh was captured by the Assyrian Army and taken to Babylon in hooks and chains.  While he was in prison, Kind Manasseh began to pray!  He really prayed to God.  God heard his prayers and forgave him.  Once King Manasseh was released, he spent the rest of his life trying to fix all that he did wrong.  He tried to turn his kingdom around for God.

The next lesson we studied was about “The Powers of Mesopotamia”.  Two groups, the Assyrians and the Babylonians were in Mesopotamia.  They were very similar to Sparta and Athens.  How?  The Assyyrians were like Spartans.  They didn’t trust anyone, and were very war-like.  They were terrifying to other places around them.  The Babylonians were similar to the Athenians.  They were very educated in math.  In fact, they created several things that we still use today!  The number of minutes in an hour and the number of degrees in a circle!  It is so amazing at how smart these people were with the little they had!

Now it is your turn to link up and share what all you have been learning about in history and geography!

Teaching Creation Thursday~ A Fossil Float Trip

Teaching Creation Thursday~ A Fossil Float Trip

Growing up near a river, I always remember going there with my dad, looking for arrowheads and just hoping to find an alligator tooth, see an alligator or just see anything that God created.  It was always a peaceful place to be.  Little did I know that there was always a possibility that I could find animal bones from the Ice Age.

Dr. Tom DeRosa and his staff have taken thousands of people on this fossil adventure over the last 10+ years.  Dr. Carolyn Reeves tells a little bit of her adventure on Peace River Arcadia, FL.

Head on over to Creation Conversations, Teaching Creation Thursday to read about this amazing adventure that you and your family can have exploring God’s Creation.

Teaching Creation Thursday~ Awesome Science DVD review and giveaway

Today for Teaching Creation Thursday, I am sharing with you an Awesome Science DVD.  Our family loves science, so any time I am able to review a science book or DVD, I get all excited.  Especially if it helps to teach about God and his creations!  I could not wait until we received the Awesome Science DVD in the mail.  I don’t know who was more excited, me or my kids!

Awesome Science: Explore the Grand Canyon with Noah Justice is the first DVD in a series that is produced by a homeschool family.  Noah, who is the host, is 14 years old and is exploring the many many layers of the Grand Canyon.   Noah and his family are teaching us how earth science  supports the biblical record.

The DVD is 30 minutes long and will teach you how the Grand Canyon was made in just days, not millions of years and how the Bible can be trusted as the Earth’s history book.  It also will show you how the many layers were made in less than a year’s time.

The DVD comes with a study guide and workbook that covers what you have learned in the DVD, to help reinforce what is taught in the DVD.  The study guide has a lot of fill in the blank and True/False questions.  It also has bonus activities that you can do.

Now that you know a little bit about the DVD, let me tell you what my kids and I think about it.  WE LOVED IT!!  The DVD is very well made.  It has a lot of beautiful scenery and the information that they provide is wonderful!  Noah Justice is an excellent host that will hold your attention from the beginning, all the way to the end.  My children who are 15, 8 and almost 7, watched the whole DVD without getting up once.  What I really loved about Awesome Science: Explore the Grand Canyon?  It was so interesting that my kids kept wanting to learn more about the Grand Canyon once the DVD was over with!  The kids told their dad about the DVD and now they are wanting to take a trip to visit the Grand Canyon!

I am so excited about this DVD series.  There are 13 in all.  I know this series will become a favorite in our household.  I highly recommend that you check it out!

Now for some good news!  I have an Awesome Science: Explore the Grand Canyon DVD to give to you all!

Project Cleanse~ What I have learned so far..

Project Cleanse~ What I have learned so far..

Project Cleanse

I had so many thoughts and plans for Project Cleanse.  Only 3 days in and I have learned so much.  I thought I was ready to get my home into shape.  I was ready to start sorting through closets and cabinets, deciding what we really needed and what was just there to make clutter and I could discard of.

However, God had a different idea in mind for me.  You see, that evening I got extremely sick.  My whole family had been sick the previous 10 days and it finally caught up with me.  I spent most of Tuesday in bed sick with chills, fever, aches and on my stomach.  During this time, God was working on my heart.  You see, all I could think about was how my plans were just not going how I wanted them to.  God knew that I wasn’t ready to start cleansing my house just yet.  He knew I needed to start with my heart.

You see, this move has been rough on me.  We have been gone from our home in NC for 5 months now and there are days that I struggle with it.  I know God moved us to Colorado, I have just had a hard time adjusting.  It has been hard to make friends and just tough in general getting used to living around so many people.  Also, a first for me, is living in an apartment.

What do I need to do first?  Cleanse my heart.  Put my focus back on God, where it belongs.   God ordained this move for our family.  He is the one who lead my husband to this job.  He has us out here in Colorado for a reason.  I need to focus on Him, by being still and listening to what he has planned for myself and our family.   I need to study God’s word more, be in prayer and ask God what he would have me do while I am in Colorado.   How will I be able to glorify God while living in Colorado?

Now that I know what I need to do to get my heart cleansed, I am now able to make my apartment a home.  It will go much smoother when I start cleaning out each room.  I will be able to focus and ask myself will the belongings help me to better glorify God.

Are you cleansing an area of your life?  Have you discovered anything new in yourself?  Has God revealed anything new to you that you need to work on?  How can I pray for you and encourage you in your life?
