Putting on the Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions for Busy Moms ~ review

Putting on the Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions for Busy Moms ~ review

As a mom, I know how busy you can be, how hard it can be to find quiet time with God.  Lately, I have found that I need to be making time with God, no matter what.  That is why I was so happy to see the devotional study, “Putting on the Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions for Busy Moms” by Katie Hornor.  I think anyone can find 10 minutes in the day, whether it be during the morning, afternoon (nap time) or at night, right before you go to bed.

Putting on the Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions for Busy Moms is a one month study that takes you through the Fruit of the Spirit; love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, meekness and temperance.

As moms, we look and compare ourselves with others.  We think the mom next door is a super mom and they do it all.  Well they don’t. They are just like you.  Katie does an amazing job with this study, by taking each fruit of the spirit and tells us, by using scripture how we can apply it to our lives.  We don’t have to try to be that Super Mom.  We be the person that God intended us to be.

When I started this study, I was going through a challenging and difficult time.  By taking those extra 10 minutes and digging into Putting on the Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions for Busy Moms, God showed me over and over, how I needed to let go of things and let Him take over.  I had to stop trying to keep up with others and just take care of what was important, my family and I.  Once I did that, everything else fell into place.  God showed me that everyone goes through their own trials and suffers through different things.

Putting on the Spirit bible study

I have thoroughly enjoyed Putting on the Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions for Busy Moms.  Not only is it helping me to make time for God, it is helping me to dig just a little bit deeper into God’s word.  It is helping me to realize that I don’t have to be a super mom.

Now how can you get this bible study?  Just visit Katie’s blog, Paradise Praises or Amazon.  It is only $4.99 and is worth every penny. When you do buy the bible study, be sure to stop by Paradise Praises and pick up the FREE workbook that goes along with it.  Do you need the workbook?  No, but it does help when you want to write and answer the questions in the bible study book.

When you visit Paradise Praises, be sure to visit the others who reviewed Putting on the Spirit: Ten-Minute Devotions for Busy Moms.  There has even been talk of a few bloggers hosting a bible study using this wonderful bible study!  That is how great it is!

our curriculum for the younger kids ~ 2013-2014

our curriculum for the younger kids ~ 2013-2014

Disclaimer: There are some affiliate links in this post. The little money that I might make from you purchasing through the links, help our family in buying our curriculum.
 I always enjoy seeing what curriculum that everyone else is using, so I thought I would share with you our curriculum we will using this upcoming school year.  I am also joining in with the iHomeschool Network and the 5th Annual “Not” Back-to-School Blog Hop.

My younger two kids are in 2nd and 3rd grade this year.  It is amazing how quickly time is passing us by.  I am enjoying being able to be at home with our kids, watching them grow and learn new things everyday.  Since there is only 18 months difference between my younger children, I find it a lot easier on our family if we do a lot of the curriculum together.  While they are on different levels in math, everything else, we do together.

our curriculum

{History and Geography}

For the first time in a couple of years, I am changing curriculum.  While I am excited about this change, I am also nervous.  I don’t think I have changed so much in one year since we started homeschooling 11 years ago!  The first big change for us is our history.  As much as I love Mystery of History and Bright Ideas Press, I wanted to focus this next year on American History.  With the way our country is today, it is important for me to teach how the country was founded and why it was founded.  After much praying and researching, I decided on My Father’s World, Adventures in U.S. History.  We will be doing everything they offer in their deluxe package, with exception of their science.  Notebooking will also be a big part of our schooling this year as well.  We will be notebooking through the 50 states for history and geography.

{Language Arts}

We will also be switching up our Language Arts curriculum.  We will finish the Bob Jones English I have from last year, but we will be adding in Growing with Grammar, A Reason For Spelling and A Reason for Handwriting.  I haven’t used a Spelling or Handwriting curriculum with the kids before.  I have always printed off worksheets and just worked on the words as we came across them in our English book.  I felt like we needed to step it up in this area of our schooling.

{Math}

For Math, we will finish up our Bob Jones curriculum from last year.  Once they finish those books, we will begin using A+ TutorSoft.  They will be doing the math on the computer.  I think this will be a good switch for the kids.  I also have the Life of Fred books; Apples, Butterflies, Cats, Dogs and Edgewood.  That I got for a great deal and we will be trying those out. Everyone that I have talked with that has used them, has said they have been a success.

{Science}

Since I have been homeschooling for so long, some companies and curriculum have just worked for us.  One of those companies is Apologia and their science curriculum.  We will be using their new science book, Exploring Creation with Chemistry and Physics along with their Jr. Notebooking journals.  I have used Apologia science curriculum for 7 years now and my children and I thoroughly enjoy reading the lessons and doing their activities.  I have learned as much as they have!

{Bible}

We will also be sticking with Apologia for Bible as we go through their curriculum book, Who is God?  We will be using their coloring book and their notebooking journal.  I bought this book last year, but when we moved, I set it aside since we had so many changes to begin with.  We will also be covering Bible lessons that My Father’s World has in Adventures in U.S. History.

{Fine Arts}

My kids love to draw and listen to music, so for Fine Arts we will be using See The Light for art lessons. Pat Knepley is amazing in the See The Light art dvd’s.  My kids really enjoy listening to her explain how to draw.  For music, we will be using Young Scholar’s Guide to Composers (Bright Ideas Press) and Introduction to Tchaikovsky & the Nutcracker Suite (My Father’s World).

After writing it all out, it seems like an awful lot of work to do and yet, I still feel like I have not added everything that I have planned!   We won’t be doing ever subject every day.  We will also be adding in field trips with our homeschool group.  Our youngest daughter will be taking dance lessons and our youngest son is wanting to play sports.  Once you fill in those days, I think it will be a well rounded year for us.

Are you excited about the upcoming school year?  I would love for you to share what all you and your family will be doing.  Be sure to stop by and link up with iHomeschool Network and see what others are doing.  As you will see, all homeschooling families are unique and do what is best for them and their families.  THAT is what is so wonderful about homeschooling!

The Family Illustrated Bible – review

The Family Illustrated Bible – review

When I saw the Family Illustrated Bible, I was excited to review it.  The Family Illustrated Bible is written by Sally Tagholm and published by New Leaf Publishing Group.  The book is hardcover and is 8.5×11 inches in size.  The illustrations in the book are beautiful, being in detail and in very bright and vibrant colors.  It is written in a storybook formation with the stories written in 1-3 pages.

You will find that the major stories of the bible are in here, like Adam and Eve, Moses, Noah and birth of Jesus.  You will also find stories from the bible that you normally wouldn’t see in a child’s bible story book, like Sodom and Gomorrah and Rahab and the spies.

The overall appearance and stories found in the bible are very nice.  However, I did find a few things that concerned me.   First off, they include The Gospel of Thomas in the New Testament section.  This book is not included in the Bible.  Some statements in a few of those stories also showed that God was worried.  Which is definitely not true.   Some of the stories just had inaccurate information, like when they Red Sea was parted.  It says the ground was muddy and the Bible clearly states that they walked on dry ground.

Overall, it is a nice book, but I don’t think I would recommend it to families.  To me, there is more wrong with the book than there is right.

Teaching Creation Thursday~ {Demystifying the Mayan Calendar}

Teaching Creation Thursday~ {Demystifying the Mayan Calendar}

TeachingCreationsThursdays

Growing up in a Christian home, going to church my whole life and reading the bible, I believe everything that the bible says.  I know with all my heart that God sent his son to die on a cross for my sins.  I also believe, just like the bible says, that Jesus will come back one day to gather his children.  It also says in the bible that no one knows the day or the time that this will happen, only God does.

Matthew 24:36

36 “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only.

Mark 13:32

32 “But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son,but only the Father.

Yet there are some people who believe differently.  Some actually think that the Mayans have predicted the world will end on December 21, 2012.  That is tomorrow.   There are a lot of people preparing for this, buying extra supplies to help them survive.  A lot of people are afraid and are worrying about what will happen. As a Christian, I am not worried at all.  If you believe in God, believe what the bible says, then you shouldn’t be worried either.  I do my best to live my life to the fullest, praising and giving God all the glory.  By doing this and raising my children to do the same, we are ready for when Jesus does come back.

Dr. Carolyn Reeves has written a couple of articles talking about the Mayans and what they believe.  Please read her one article below and then go visit the other article that she wrote for the American Family Association Journal.

Demystifying the Mayan Calendar

Written by Dr. Carolyn Reeves

It’s time to demystify the Mayan calendar, which ends on December 21, 2012. It is causing quite a stir among many people who are wondering if the Mayans have really identified this date as the time for worldwide catastrophic events.

My husband and I were traveling through a small town recently and stopped at a local café to eat. A young man seated near us was passionately trying to persuade his friends to stock up on food, water, batteries, and other supplies, because December 21, 2012, was going to start a period of worldwide catastrophes.

Later that week, I read a news account of a large number of New Agers who were gathering in France near a mountain where they believe space ships were coming on December 21 to beam them up before calamity struck the earth.

During the following week, I asked several people what they thought about December 21.  Some people said they planned to buy extra food and supplies for that time–just in case.

So, what are Christians to make of an ancient Mayan Indian prediction? First of all, the early Mayans were not a primitive ignorant tribe.

They had an in-depth scientific knowledge of astronomy, made correct observations of heavenly bodies, and developed accurate calendars based on these skills. Amazingly, they were able to recognize that our sun travels in a long pathway through the skies, and it was predicted to intersect another astrological pathway in the skies on the winter solstice (December 21) in 2012. They considered this intersection to be so unusual that they may have started with this date and worked their way backwards as they constructed their calendar.  The Mayans also developed shorter accurate calendars, but the long count calendar is the one getting all the attention this year.

The end of some of the Mayan calendars was believed to mark when the sun moved into a new house. There is evidence that entire Mayan cities moved into new homes on these dates, abandoning or burning their old homes as they left.

The Mayans didn’t progressively acquire their knowledge of astronomy on their own.  It seems as if older civilizations across the Atlantic Ocean, such as Egyptians, Phoenicians, and Chaldeans, were the first to possess accurate science-based knowledge of astronomy and keep up with time and dates. Some of these early civilizations also produced skilled sailors who were able to travel far and wide in well-built ships looking for minerals and other resources.

At some point, a group of Mediterranean navigators are almost certain to have crossed the Atlantic and established cities in the Central America area, from which the Mayans descended. Similarities between the Mayans and the early Mediterranean civilizations are strong evidence of this connection–massive  pyramids, a cuneiform type of written language, a similar mathematical system, similarities in artistic works, and accurate knowledge of astronomy.

The Mayans probably lost much of their scientific and technological knowledge over the centuries as they became immersed in pagan worship of the sun and eventually lost contact with Europeans, but they retained the knowledge used to make their calendars.

As for the last day of the old Mayan calendar, it is just another day in which the sun may cross an astrological pathway in the sky on December 21, 2012. It may well be a rare solar event, but it’s no more a sign of bad luck than someone walking under a ladder on Friday 13th at the same time a black cat ran across the person’s pathway. Christians would do well to reject such superstitious signs as a source of knowledge and reality.
