a Colorado sunrise and sunset

a Colorado sunrise and sunset

The sunrises and sunsets that we have seen since we have been living in Colorado, have truly been amazing. I never get tired of watching God’s creation. This blue and orange sky was just a little more special tonight with the Denver Broncos beating the Kansas City Chiefs. It was almost like God was smiling on us, the Denver Broncos fans. 🙂

The picture of the sunrise was taken with my phone. It just did not do the actual sunrise, justice. It was just beautiful. I enjoyed watching the sun come up, as I was taking my husband to church for his early morning worship band practice. This quiet time with God is so important to me. Enjoying the stillness of God, as He kisses the earth with the sun.

The sunset was equally as beautiful. Like I said, it was almost like God was smiling on us Denver Broncos fans.

Van Gogh Exhibit at the Denver Art Museum ~ field trip

Van Gogh Exhibit at the Denver Art Museum ~ field trip

My kids and I had the opportunity of a lifetime this past week.  We went to the Denver Art Museum to see the Van Gogh Exhibit.   It was absolutely amazing.  Just seeing the masterpieces that this man painted and sketched, was truly an experience.  Vincent Van Gogh didn’t start painting until he was 27 and what he was able to accomplish in those 10 short years with his paintings and drawings, before he took his own life at the age of 37, was truly amazing.

When we first arrived at the Denver Art Museum, we met up with our homeschool group.  We were then lead to the Van Gogh Exhibit area, where we were all handed a headset so we could listen to the audio tour.  Above certain paintings were numbers that coincided with the history or story of how that painting came about.  The tour talked of how Van Gogh got started in painting and how at different times, different artists inspired him.   They told a little about his life, how close he was to his brother Theo and how Van Gogh felt a connection to the poorer folks and people who worked a lot with their hands.

It is so hard to put into words what I felt, as I listened about his life and the connection he had with certain people and how he portrayed his feelings and thoughts on paper and canvas.  While he did have happy times, Van Gogh also lived a troubled life.  He was in and out of a mental hospital and fought depression often.   I wish I could have taken pictures of some of the paintings, but photography was not allowed.  If you ever get a chance to attend an exhibit like this, I highly recommend it.

After we left the Van Gogh Exhibit, we went to a section with paintings by Charles Partridge Adams.  He was from Colorado and painted landscapes of Colorado during the last 1800’s and early 1900’s.  His paintings were gorgeous.  He really captured the colors of the different seasons.

My pictures aren’t all that great because I was taking them with my phone.  All I can say is that they are truly amazing and if you are ever in the Denver area, you definitely need to go to the Denver Art Museum to see them.  The Rocky Mountain Majesty exhibit will be on display until September 8th, 2013.  I am definitely planning a trip back, before this exhibit leaves the museum.

The last section we made it to before a couple of the kids got to feeling bad was the American Indian Art Exhibit.

Again, no words to describe the beautiful artwork, bead work, baskets, pottery, textiles that were on display in this area.

I loved how it talked about how they lived, what they wore and how they survived.

What hit me the hardest though, was the two pictures below.  It is two pictures of The Great Smoky Mountains with Indians walking along the bottom of both pictures.  They represent the Indians being led down what was eventually known as the Trail of Tears.  This was when the government forced the Indians to leave, to go live on the reservations in the West.  Because of that exile, so many lives were lost.

We didn’t even get to see half of this collection before we had to leave.

I love history and the stories it tells.  You can learn so much from history, if you will view it with an open heart and mind.  Let’s just face it, some history, you don’t want to repeat itself.

Do you love to read about history?  What is your favorite time period in history?

Denver Zoo has a free day! ~ field trip

Denver Zoo has a free day! ~ field trip

We recently found out that the Denver Zoo has free days for the public. One of those days was last week. I asked our neighbor who homeschools her 7 year old son if they wanted to go with us. They said yes, so off we went! We packed a lunch, snacks and bottled water for the day. We got to the zoo fairly early and there were already a lot of families who were taking advantage of this wonderful opportunity.

King of the Jungle

As you walk in through the front gate, the first animals that you come to is the African Lions.  They were absolutely gorgeous!  And huge!

Cape Buffalo

Being a zoo with a lot of animals, the one thing you do notice right off is the smell.  I kept giggling at Samuel who kept asking why the animals smelled so badly.  He walked around the zoo with his shirt over his nose, most of the day.  The smell was really horrible at the Cape Buffalo area.

Dall’s Sheep

I have seen mountain sheep before on Mt.Evans.  Was even able to get some really close pictures of them.  So I liked watching these that were at the zoo.  The one with the horns was the dominating one.  He would go up to the younger ones and push them below him.  He was definitely playing king of the mountain and succeeded!

Claire with the Capuchin

Claire had told me before we arrived at the zoo that she wanted to see the monkeys.  Her Papa calls her, his little monkey and so she wanted to have her picture taken with them, so we could send it to him.

Samuel seeing how tall he is next to am Emperor Penguin

Samuel thought this was pretty cool, being able to compare how tall he is to an Emperor Penguin.

Grizzly Bears

While we have seen black bears in North Carolina, this was our first time seeing grizzly bears.  I loved watching the grizzly bears.  Tundra (female bear), kept pacing back and forth while watching Tipani (sp?- male bear) eat his bone.  Tundra was waiting for him to walk away from his bone so she could take it, even though she had her own!

Kids checking out an Elephant skull

The Denver Zoo has just recently added a new section to the Zoo.  It is a much larger Elephant exhibit.  From what we were told, they have added several more elephants to the zoo.  It is amazing how large and graceful these animals are.

Another highlight for the kids were seeing the giraffes.  We also got a lesson in giraffe anatomy.  When we walked up the largest giraffe was going to the bathroom.  They must have a bladder the size of a basketball or larger.  The make giraffe stood there urinating for several minutes.  Adults and kids all got a giggle out of seeing this!

Giraffe

The last exhibit we went through, was the Tropical Climate building.  This building had so many different types of frogs, lizards, fish and snakes in it.  It was very humid and damp.  This was also a big hit with the kids.  It is so amazing to see all the different types of animals that God has created.

Kids looking at a Komodo Dragon

We spent about 3 hours at the zoo that day.  I would have stayed longer, but the kids were all tired.  So we left after leaving the Tropical building.  The zoo was so big that we didn’t even get to see everything.  We are excited about going back again on the next free day.  This time, dad is going to take off a half a day so he can go with us.  The kids can’t wait to show him all the animals we saw.  I can’t wait to see the animals that we missed on our first trip.  We enjoyed the zoo so much, that we are planning on buying a yearly membership.

Do you have a zoo that is close by?  What are your favorite animals?
